Solar panels for your business – FAQs

Solar Panel installation in London - Residential solar installers in West London
Should my business invest in solar panels?

In today’s economic climate, solar energy can be a game-changer. With solar PV panel systems and solar battery storage for commercial buildings, your business can:

  • Reduce or even eliminate electricity bill costs
  • Minimise risk and uncertainty from unpredictable energy market prices
  • Earn additional revenue from exporting any excess energy back to the grid
  • Enjoy clean energy with zero carbon emissions
  • Meet or work towards your company’s environmental sustainability targets
  • Create a valuable business asset and grow the value of your premises

Thanks to energy bill savings and the opportunity to sell energy back to the national grid, the cost of installing a new solar PV system can often be fully recovered within five to ten years.

How much maintenance will my solar panels require?
Solar panels for business premises are low-maintenance; simply requiring cleaning around once a year and a maintenance checkup once every four or five years. In addition, regular monitoring of your solar panels can help you identify and remedy any faults which might affect their performance and/or safety. At J C Electrical UK, our engineers can install monitoring system technology and building management integration as part of your commercial solar panel installation project; plus regular solar panel maintenance visits for total peace of mind. Get in touch to find out more.
How long do solar panels last?
With the proper maintenance (see above), most commercial solar panels will last for at least 25 to 30 years.
Will solar panels work in poor weather?
Yes. While sunny days provide the optimal condition, solar panels will still generate electricity in the shade and during cloudy days and winter weather.
Where should solar panels be placed?

Your company premises may offer several different options for solar panel placement; including:

  • Sloped roofs
  • Flat roofs
  • Car parking facilities
  • Ground areas

Solar panels do not need to be south-facing; although south-facing panels will generally produce the most energy for business premises in the UK.

To ensure you get the most from your solar technology investment, our team can provide a complete site survey and advise on the best placement of your solar panels for year-round solar power coverage.

Can I install solar panels on rented commercial premises?

If you currently rent your work premises from a commercial property landlord, you’re free to install solar panels as long as the roof or ground area in question is covered by your lease.

If you’re unsure, we recommend speaking to your landlord first.

Will solar panels work at night?

Solar panels cannot produce electricity during night hours, but installing a solar battery storage system alongside your panels will enable you to store excess energy during the day; which can then be used during night operations if needed.

The JC Electrical (UK) team can provide solar battery installation as part of a solar panel project; or provide battery retrofitting for existing commercial solar setups. Contact us to discuss your requirements.

How does selling solar energy to the national grid work?

Under the government’s Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme, Businesses and homeowners alike can both receive payments for exporting their excess renewable energy (such as solar) to the national grid.

Businesses must pay tax on income from SEG payments. However, SEG payments are not liable for VAT unless your business is VAT registered; in which case the VAT will be added to your payments and you’ll need to declare it to HMRC.

You’ll need to apply with an energy supplier that offers an SEG tariff.

Each supplier has their own rates and terms, and you do not need to use the same energy company for SEG exports as you’re currently using for your electricity supply; but often the better deals come with working with a single energy company for both.

To be eligible for SEG, you’ll also need to show that your installation is appropriately certified or otherwise meets the standards required by the SEG tariff provider. Again, each supplier will have different requirements on this.

In any case, J C Electrical UK will ensure that your installation is eligible for SEG payments.
Small-scale solar installations that produce under 50kW will be certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) while larger commercial-scale solar installations will be designed to meet nationwide standards for safety, quality and energy efficiency.

For a list of suppliers currently offering an SEG tariff, visit the Ofgem website.
