Electric vehicle charging Frequently Asked Questions

EV Charger Installation London
What’s the difference between the types of EV charging connectors and ports?

There’s a variety of different EV charger types out there, with some more common here in the UK than others. The short version is:

  • Level 1 AC slow chargers designed for overnight charging typically consist of a single cable with a 3-pin domestic plug on one end, and a Type 2 (aka Mennekes) connector on the other.
  • Level 2 AC fast chargers typically use the Type 2 Mennekes connector.
  • DC Fast Charging often uses the Combined Charging System (CCS) type 2 connector or the CHAdeMO connector.

We’ve put together an in-depth guide to EV charger connectors and port types please take a look for more information.

Not sure which connector type is right for your chargepoint? Our engineers can provide impartial advice and guidance; simply reach out to us for help.

What are tethered and untethered (aka socketed) EV chargers?
Tethered EV chargers come with their own built-in cable, which drivers simply plug into their vehicle to start charging. Tethered chargers are generally considered more convenient to use; and since the cable is permanently attached to the charger unit, it won’t be accidentally left behind or stolen. However, you are limited to the length of the built-in cable and the type of connector it comes with. Untethered EV chargers (aka socketed EV chargers) do not come with their own cable. To connect their vehicle to these chargepoints, drivers will need a separate cable that plugs into the chargepoint at one end and their vehicle at the other. Untethered chargers offer greater flexibility and adaptability; if you need a longer/shorter cable of a different connector type, you can simply purchase a new cable. However, you’ll need to remember to bring the cable with you on journeys, and it could be stolen or left behind by accident. Can’t decide between tethered and untethered charging? J C Electrical UK’s EV charger installers can help you select the right charging unit to match your needs and budget; just get in touch.
Are EV chargers waterproof and weatherproof?
Yes. Modern EV charging technology is designed to handle wet weather conditions, and they’re safe to use in the rain; so drivers can charge their vehicles no matter the weather.
Are EV chargers secure?
If you’re concerned about theft or unauthorised use of your EV charger, don’t worry. Charging cables can be secured via physical padlocks and/or digital smart locking technology, and charger units can also be fitted within lockable cabinets to prevent theft. Our team can help you select an EV charger model and security accessories to meet your security needs; as well as a safe location for installation to minimise the risk of theft.
What financial support is available for EV charger installation projects?

At time of writing, the UK government is currently offering a range of grants for electric vehicle chargepoint installation projects.

Whether you’re a homeowner, a renter, a business or a state-funded education establishment, you can apply for support to help fund your EV charger installation. Find out more at the GOV.UK page for EV chargepoint grants.
