When a user tries to access an area, a typical access control system will:

• authenticate whether or not they have permission to access the area, and
• allow or deny entry. 

Door entry (also known as entrance control) is the component of access control which actually physically enables and/or prevents a person from gaining entry.

Door entry systems include things like gates, barriers and turnstiles, but also the electronic lock fittings in doors.

Intercom systems are often considered to fall under door entry systems as well; and if your premises are located on an upper floor, the building’s lift system may be considered a form of door entry too.
